A Tiny Dream

There must be something in the water, because I am on a serious kick to check things off The Final Countdown list!

First the food blog, then the Ireland trip, now…..

Well, just keep reading 😉

I’ve been attracted to the idea of living in a tiny home ever since I came across Jay Shafer and his Tumbleweed business in 2011. It’s my belief that the only thing getting in the way of your dreams, is yourself. One of our dreams has always been to design and build our own home. Even with two incomes, it’s been tough saving money living in such an expensive area (Washington, D.C.). Not to mention the pile of bills we pay each month. The first solution was moving to a more rural area in Maryland, which is much cheaper (and way friendlier). Our second solution? Start to build a tiny home with what little savings we do have, live in it once built, and save enough over the next few years so that we can pay off all our debt. Ultimately saving enough to buy/build our dream home.

To me, this strategy trumps all. Not to mention, we’ll have a pretty kick-ass guest house once we’re done living in it. Score!

The first step? Buying a set of plans from the Tumbleweed website. We decided on the Fencl, a cozy 130 sq ft home, built on a trailer. You can find them here.

This is going to be a huge lifestyle change. Not just for me, but for Chris (and Martin!) as well. I’m sure there will be days we regret it, days where we can’t wait any longer to get it done, and I’m sure many days where we will be asking “how the hell did we get so lucky?” Either way, I’m ecstatic to get this rolling.

As with the food portion of my blog, I hope you find inspiration from this journey. My quest to live a simpler lifestyle has just begun. And like my plant-based journey, there are bound to be some hilarious (and not so hilarious) bumps along the way!

Dream big,

Andria

p.s. In case you haven’t figured it out, it’s #16 on my list. A house is a house, no matter how big or small 🙂

I love your project! My name is Whitney, I am completing a Certificate at Yestermorrow Design Build school in Warren, VT. For my project I am researching the availability of homeowners insurance for tiny homes. If you own a tiny home please take a few moments to fill out this survey. Thank you for your time! https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/DXXW3X3
